Things That Are All [info]selasphorus's Fault:
I trotted across a few miles of pasture today with a pair of quite superlative bins and a Sibley guide to see what was going on at the reservoir. DUCK PARADISE, it turns out.

We saw:
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD (BICOLOR)
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER (butterbutt!)
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT
CHIPPING SPARROW
HOUSE SPARROW
BARN SWALLOW
MOURNING DOVE
AMERICAN COOT
MALLARD
WOOD DUCK
CANADA GOOSE
CANVASBACK
REDHEAD
RUDDY DUCK
NORTHERN SHOVELER
NORTHERN PINTAIL
COMMON MERGANSER
AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN (omg!)
RING-NECKED PHEASANT
GRAY PARTRIDGE
SWAINSON'S HAWK
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK
REDTAILED HAWK
NORTHERN HARRIER

... and that's just today.

SO MANY DUX OMG. Also, conveniently in breeding colors, so I could identify them relatively quickly and show off for my mother.

The raptors are awesome. I loved watching the harriers: it was a mated pair, male and female, and I got to watch them cooperatively hunting, with one flushing and one in position to pounce. Until the yellowheads drove them off, anyway.

Have you ever seen a whistling duck? If not, come visit meeeeee!

Also, is your life list posted somewhere? If it is, I can tell you what else I can promise you that's not checked off on your life list!

God, the little stripey babies... Ducklings are far too adorable.

I think whistling-ducks are among the prettiest ducks, as long as you're not focusing on the gaudy Mandarins and wood ducks. ;) (But my favorite duck remains the smew. It's pretty AND it has an awesome name.)

I'd love to see a whistling duck. :> I don't have an "official" lifelist anywhere... although, if "ooh, birdwatching" is in the first ten things I think of when I head for the ol' homestead, I should probably start keeping one. Except that that way lies madness...

Damn you, [info]selasphorus. Damn you.
